A Lufthansa Airbus A340-600, registration D-AIHE performing flight LH-574 from Munich (Germany) to Cape Town (South Africa), was enroute at FL330 about 20nm southeast of Florence (Italy) when the crew needed to shut the #3 engine (Trent 556, inboard right hand) down, drifted down to FL260 and returned to Munich for a safe landing about 70 minutes later.

A replacement A340-600 registration D-AIHK reached Cape Town with a delay of 4 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service on Nov 27th.

On Dec 5th 2016 The Aviation Herald received information that there was a problem with the FADEC engine #3, the crew did not have an EGT display.
