A Qantas Airbus A330-200, registration VH-EBN performing flight QF-776 from Perth,WA to Melbourne,VI (Australia) with 256 people on board, was climbing out of Perth's runway 03 in contact with departure frequency when a loud bang was heard and the right hand engine (CF6) emitted streaks of flame. The crew stopped the climb at 4000 feet and returned to Perth for a safe landing on runway 03 about 13 minutes after departure and vacated the runway.

Qantas reported the engine ingested a bird. The extent of the damage is currently being assessed.

A replacement Airbus A330-200 registration VH-EBP departed Perth with a delay of 3 hours and is currently enroute to Melbourne estimated to reach the destination with a delay of 2.5 hours.
