A Delta Airlines Boeing 717-200, registration N961AT performing flight DL-1228 from Atlanta,GA to Jackson,MS (USA), was climbing out of Atlanta when the crew stopped the climb at FL220 due to an aft lavatory smoke indication and returned to Atlanta for a safe landing about 30 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported the captain announced an aft lavatory smoke indication as cause for their return to Atlanta. After landing mechanics boarded the aircraft and headed towards the rear of the cabin, some time later the captain announced, that they needed to switch to a different aircraft, the mechanics had found some smell in the tail cone.

A replacement Boeing 717-200 registration N926AT reached Jackson with a delay of 2.5 hours.
