An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N832NN performing flight AA-2444 from Saint Louis,MO to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was climbing out of Saint Louis' runway 30L when the crew reported a bird strike into their right hand engine (CFM56), stopped the climb at 9000 feet and returned to Saint Louis for a safe landing on runway 30R about 25 minutes after departure. A runway 30L inspection revealed debris on the departure runway.

The FAA reported the aircraft sustained substantial damage to the right hand engine and fuselage as result of bird strikes. The occurrence was rated an accident, an investigation by the NTSB has been opened.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N305NX reached Los Angeles with a delay of 5 hours.
