An American Airlines Boeing 787-800, registration N812AA performing flight AA-288 from Shanghai Pudong (China) to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 100 passengers and 14 crew, was enroute at FL380 over the Pacific Ocean about 710nm south of Cold Bay,AK (USA) when the crew needed to shut the #2 engine (GENx, right hand) down. The crew drifted the aircraft down to FL210 and turned north to divert to Cold Bay. The aircraft landed safely on Cold Bay's runway 15 about 2 hours later.

The FAA confirmed the aircraft diverted due to an engine issue.

The airline reported the crew decided to divert because of a light in the cockpit indicating a possible mechanical problem.

Local residents in Cold Bay are preparing to house the passengers for an overnight stay.
