A Jazz de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GIJZ performing flight QK-8512 from Charlottetown,PE to Montreal,QC (Canada) with 71 people on board, was enroute at FL240 about 200nm eastnortheast of Montreal when the aircraft encountered moderate to severe turbulence, that lasted for about 3-4 minutes. The autopilot disconnected, the aircraft encountered large changes in pitch and roll. The crew requested a descent to FL180, where conditions had been reported smooth. The first officer was unable to reach the flight guidance panel, the captain therefore attempted to regain control of the aircraft and succeeded following some more yaw, pitch and roll oscillations. The aircraft stabilized at FL180, the flight crew inquired with the cabin about condition of cabin crew and passengers and was informed that no injuries had occurred, just a trolley cart had tripped over. The aircraft continued to Montreal for a safe landing about 40 minutes later.

The Canadian TSB reported the operator downloaded the data from the flight data recorder. None of the limits stated in the aircraft maintenance manual had been exceeded, therefore no further maintenance action was required.
