A PAL Philippine Airlines Airbus A340-300, registration RP-C3435 performing flight PR-422 from Manila (Philippines) to Tokyo Haneda (Japan) with 222 passengers and 13 crew, was climbing out of Manila's runway 24 when the crew stopped the climb at about 11,200 feet reporting smoke in the cabin and returned to Manila for a safe landing on runway 24 about 20 minutes after departure.

A replacement A340-300 registration RP-C8783 departed Manila with a delay of 6 hours.
