A Delta Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N323NB performing flight DL-1606 from Salt Lake City,UT to Austin,TX (USA) with 120 people on board, was climbing out of Salt Lake City's runway 16L when the crew contacted departure and was cleared to climb to 14,000 feet, the crew however did not read back that clearance immediately, only reading back their flight number sounding a bit puzzled. The crew subsequently acknowledged the instruction a few seconds later, subsequently reported they had an engine (CFM56) malfunction, actually an engine stall. The crew stopped the climb at 11,000 feet and returned to Salt Lake City. On final approach, already on tower frequency, the crew initiated a go around advising, they now needed to shut the engine down. The aircraft positioned for another approach to runway 16R and landed safely about 30 minutes after departure and 12 minutes after the go around.

The FAA reported the aircraft sustained a bird strike, the engine received substantial damage.
