A United Boeing 767-300, registration N673UA performing flight UA-30 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Munich (Germany) with 190 people on board, was enroute at FL360 over the Atlantic Ocean about 320nm east of St. Johns,NL (Canada) when the crew selected their flight management system to offset the aircraft to the right of the route center line, the aircraft however began to turn left. The crew was unable to correct the wrong offset, switched to the backup flight plan but also received an error. The crew decided to turn around and return to Newark, Oceanic control however was unable to provide a clearance due to conflicting traffic. The crew declared Mayday, performed oceanic contingency procedures to descend to FL300 without clearance and then received clearance back to Newark. The aircraft landed safely back in Newark about 3.5 hours later.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance found the right High Frequency Transceiver had failed and replaced it. Subsequent tests showed no further anomaly.
