An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N379AA performing flight AA-65 from Zurich (Switzerland) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was enroute at FL340 over the Atlantic Ocean about 420nm west of Shannon (Ireland) when the crew received a Slat Asymmetry EICAS message. The crew coordinated with Shannon Oceanic Control to turn around in direction London Heathrow,EN (UK) and was enroute eastwards at FL340 about 180nm west of Shannon when the crew discovered the flap lever was out of its detent and returned the lever into its detent, which resolved the indication. The crew decided to turn westwards again and continue the journey towards New York, however, while enroute over Canada in contact with Moncton,NB (Canada) center the crew decided to divert to Bangor,ME (USA) for a fuel stop due to the additional track miles flown earlier. The aircraft landed safely in Bangor, refueled and reached New York with a delay of 3:15 hours.
