A Jazz Canadair CRJ-100, registration C-FWJI performing flight QK-8654 from Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) to Montreal,QC (Canada) with 21 people on board, was departing Chicago's runway 32L when immediately after becoming airborne all AC busses were lost causing the loss of primary and multifunction displays. The crew used standby instruments to maintain control of the aircraft, the ram air turbine deployed and provided backup power and restored the captain's displays. The crew subsequently declared emergency reporting the total loss of AC power, advised they were applying visual flight rules, levelled off at 2500 feet and decided to return to Chicago advising they had a lengthy checklist to process and requesting delay vectors. While working the checklist the crew was able to restore power from both generators and performed a safe visual landing on Chicago's runway 27R about 15 minutes after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported the aircraft suffered a complete loss of AC power resulting in the loss of primary and multifunction displays and in the release of the ram air turbine, which was able to provide backup power and restored the captain's instruments. Working the relevant checklist the crew was able to restore both generators.
