An Air Canada Airbus A320-200, registration C-GKOE performing flight AC-1159 from Toronto,ON to Calgary,AB (Canada) with 153 people on board, was on final approach to Calgary's runway 35R when the crew decided to go around around 1000 feet AGL following a wind shear at about 17:22L (23:22Z). While climbing out the aircraft encountered hail that cracked the captain's windshield. The crew declared emergency reporting their windshield was all banged up and requested to divert to Lethbridge,AB (Canada) located about 100nm southsoutheast of Calgary. The aircraft climbed to 10,000 feet, landed safely on Lethbridge's runway 05 about 40 minutes after the go-around and stopped on the intersection runway 05/23 and runway 12/30 where emergency services attended to the aircraft.

The Canadian TSB reported that in addition to the windscreen damage there was also hail damage to the radome and horizontal stabilizer. A number of lamps of the landing, taxi and turn off lights needed to be replaced.

At the time of the occurrence Calgary reported hail stones of almost the size of golf balls.
