Bremen's police reported the engine caught fire prompting the immediate reaction by the crew and return to Bremen.
The airline reported the engine ingested birds, confirmed there were bangs and streaks of flame, however the engine never caught fire as claimed by police (editorial note: bangs and streaks of flames usually are the result of compressor stalls or engine surges as result of disruption of air flow).
