An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N972TW performing flight AA-1051 from Newark,NJ to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA), was climbing out of Newark's runway 22R when a bird impacted the aircraft prompting the crew to level off at 6000 feet and return to Newark for a safe landing on runway 22L about 15 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported a pitot tube received minor damage due to a bird strike.

A replacement MD-82 registration N480AA reached Chicago with a delay of 6 hours.
