A Ryanair Boeing 737-800, registration EI-FRB performing flight FR-5489 from Dusseldorf Niederrhein (Germany) to Porto (Portugal) with 185 people on board, was enroute at FL340 about 70nm southwest of Cologne/Bonn (Germany) already in Belgian Airspace when the crew decided to turn around and divert to Cologne reporting fumes on board. Emergency services in Cologne prepared for smoke in the cockpit. On final approach to Cologne's runway 32R the crew advised there was no smoke. The aircraft landed safely on runway 32R and taxied to the apron.

The airline reported a strange odour on board of the aircraft. The aircraft is being examined.

The airline followed up the following day that the odour was identified harmless. The customers were provided with refreshments, a replacement aircraft took the customers to Porto. The occurrence aircraft has returned to service in the meantime.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration EI-ENB reached Porto as flight FR-548 with a delay of about 11 hours.

The occurrence aircraft resumed service about 13 hours after landing in Cologne.
