A postflight inspection revealed evidence of a bird strike however, the captain recalled that during takeoff from Donetsk he observed a flock of birds lifting from the runway. An examination of the left hand engine revealed three damaged fan blades.
Ukraine's Ministry of Transport reported in their monthly bulletin that a landfill is located about 9km from the airport of Donetsk attracting birds. At the day of the bird strike Donetsk Airport had not applied a number of bird scare activities. The cause of the incident was the unfavourable ornithological situation around the airport and the lack of bird scare activity.
