An SA Airlink Avro RJ-85, registration ZS-SSJ performing flight 4Z-8730/SA-8730 from Pietermaritzburg to Johannesburg (South Africa), had just levelled off at cruise level 300 when one of the left hand engines (LF507) emitted a huge bang and streak of flames, shortly followed by a second bang and streak of flames. The crew shut the engine down and continued to Johannesburg for a safe landing about 30 minutes later.

The airline confirmed the engine needed to be shut down in flight and was subsquently replaced.

The occurrence aircraft resumed service 53 hours after landing.
