An Aviateca Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of Avianca, registration TG-TRD performing flight AV-700 from Guatemala City (Guatemala) to San Jose (Costa Rica), was climbing through 8000 feet out of La Aurora Airport's runway 20 when the crew stopped the climb at about 8500 feet due to a bird strike and decided to return to Guatemala City's La Aurora Airport for a safe landing on runway 20 about 18 minutes after departure.

Guatemala's Accident Investigation Board reported the bird strike damaged the Ice Evidence Probe (IEP). The occurrence was rated a serious incident and is being investigated.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 117 hours (almost 5 days) before resuming service.
