A British Airways Airbus A320-200, registration G-MIDO performing flight BA-2679 from Dubrovnik (Croatia) to London Gatwick,EN (UK) with 140 people on board, was enroute at FL360 about 120nm southeast of Venice (Italy) when the crew received a cabin fire indication and decided to divert to Venice for a safe landing on Venice's runway 04R about 30 minutes later.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration G-MIDT was dispatched to Venice, resumed the flight and reached London with a delay of 8 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in Venice for 7 hours, then positioned to London Gatwick. The smoke detector indication was identified false. The aircraft resumed service the following morning.
