The crew actioned the relevant checklists turning off the battery main switch in the process, declared emergency and returned to Montreal advising the passengers would need to be evacuated on the runway. On final approach the temperature had reduced to about 76 degrees C, the aircraft continued for a safe landing on runway 10 about 50 minutes after departure, the passengers deplaned via stairs onto the runway and were bussed to the terminal.

The aircraft was then towed to the terminal to unload the passenger luggage, then towed to the maintenance hangar. The thermal runaway of the battery had not caused any damage, the battery was put into quarantaine. Main and emergency batteries were replaced and the aircraft returned to service.
