A Kulula Boeing 737-800, registration ZS-ZWB performing flight MN-135 from Johannesburg to Cape Town (South Africa), was climbing through 8000 feet out of Johannesburg's runway 21R when a bird impacted the vertical stabilizer. In the absence of any abnormal indications the crew continued to Cape Town where the aircraft landed safely about 110 minutes later.

A post flight inspection revealed the bird had impacted and penetrated the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Cape Town until Mar 21st 2016, ferried to Johannesburg and is still on the ground, now in Johannesburg, 11 days after the bird strike and is estimated to remain on the ground for at least another week.

On Apr 5th 2016 The Aviation Herald received information indicating that the vertical stabilizer is going to be replaced.

The bird was identified to have been an Egyptian Goose (length 71-73cm/27-29in, wingspan 135-155cm/53-61in, mass 1.5 to 2.25kg/3.3 to 5lbs).
