A Republic Airlines Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of American Airlines, registration N415YX performing flight AA-4233 from Raleigh/Durham,NC to New York La Guardia,NY (USA) with 55 passengers and 4 crew, was on approach to New York La Guardia maintaining 5000 feet when the aircraft received a lightning strike causing damage to the left hand stabilizer. The crew immediately requested to divert to New York's JFK airport and declared emergency. The aircraft landed safely on JFK's runway 22R about 25 minutes later.

The FAA reported the aircraft was hit by lightning about 10nm out. The aircraft subsequently diverted to JFK Airport.
