A Skywest Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of United, registration N498CA performing flight OO-5248/UA-5248 from Victoria,BC (Canada) to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 47 passengers, was climbing through FL280 out of Victoria when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (CF34) down. The crew decided to divert to Seattle,WA (USA), burned off fuel and landed safely in Seattle.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled.

The airline reported the crew diverted to Seattle due to an engine indication.
