A Ryanair Boeing 737-800, registration EI-EMB performing flight FR-9554 from Memmingen (Germany) to Girona,SP (Spain), was boarding for the flight, when a 3 year old child climbed the stairs to the aircraft but fell off the stairs onto the apron and received serious injuries. The child and mother were taken to a hospital.

The aircraft was able to depart on time nonetheless and completed the flight without further incident.

On Feb 16th 2016 Germany's BFU made the occurrence known in their October Bulletin stating that the three year old child received serious injuries when it fell off the stairs onto the apron. Despite the occurrence being rated an accident the BFU is not investigating the occurrence.

The airline confirmed the event stating:

During boarding of this flight from Memmingen to Girona (on 25 Oct 2015), a 3 year old passenger tripped at the bottom of the steps and required emergency medical assistance. The child and his mother were brought to hospital by ambulance and released subsequently.

It is precisely to avoid such accidents that we request (in both our boarding and disembarking PA's) that adults travelling with young children ensure they hold the child's hand both on the ramp and aircraft steps.
