A Ryanair Boeing 737-800, registration EI-EKS performing flight FR-161 from Dublin (Ireland) to Copenhagen (Denmark) with 171 passengers and 6 crew, departed Dublin's runway 28 and reported a bird strike upon rotation while in the initial climb. In the absence of abnormal indications the crew continued the climb, but stopped the climb at about FL170 reporting they now confirmed the bird strike went most likely through engine #2 (CFM56, right hand). A runway inspection reported no bird carcasses were recovered from the runway. The crew decided to return to Dublin and landed safely back on runway 28 about 35 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration EI-EFS reached Copenhagen with a delay of 2 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 18 hours, then resumed service.

The airline confirmed a minor bird strike, the passengers were taken to Copenhagen on a spare aircraft.
