A Swiss Airbus A320-200, registration HB-IJN performing flight LX-1305 from Saint Petersburg (Russia) to Geneva (Switzerland), was descending through about FL180 towards Geneva when the left hand engine (CFM56) emitted a bang and streaks of flame. The crew worked the related checklists, stabilized the engine and after intercepting the localizer reported that both engines were working fine at the moment. The aircraft landed safely on runway 23 about 20 minutes later and taxied to the apron with emergency services in trail.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground 5 hours after landing.

A passenger told Russian media that the engine was on fire, which only stopped after the aircraft had descended from about 6000 to 2000 meters of altitude.
