A United Boeing 747-400, registration N119UA performing flight UA-888 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Beijing (China), was enroute at FL360 over the Gulf of Alaska about 200nm west of Ketchikan,AK (USA) when the crew decided to turn around and return to San Francisco due to problems with the #3 engine (PW4056, inboard right). The aircraft descended to FL350 for the return. About 40 minutes later, about 70nm southeast of Sandspit,BC (Canada), the crew needed to shut the #3 engine down, drifted down to FL270 and continued to San Francisco at FL270 for a safe landing on runway 28R about 3 hours after turning around.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration N105UA reached Beijing with a delay of 9:50 hours.
