The airline's press office told The Aviation Herald they are still investigating what happened, a technical problem is being suspected. A replacement aircraft has been dispatched to Abuja.
Two ground observers reported independently that the aircraft diverted due to smoke on board of the aircraft.
Local Nigerian Media report the aircraft needed to divert to Abuja due to bad weather in South Africa.
A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration G-BNLY is currently enroute to Abuja overflying Algeria/Niger at the moment. G-BLNY is estimated to depart Abuja on Jan 26th/22:00L and reach Cape Town with a delay of approximately 18 hours.
