A United Boeing 737-900, registration N67845 performing flight UA-1977 from Seattle,WA to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 164 people on board, landed on Chicago's runway 27R (length 2,286 meters/7,500 feet) at 07:41 (13:41Z) but overran the end of the runway and came to a stop on the paved surface of the runway end safety area about 110 meters past the end of the runway. There were no injuries, a number of runway lights were damaged.

Tower had reported RVR at 5000 feet while issuing landing clearance to the flight, RVR was decreasing and was reported 3500 feet to next arrivals at the time of the runway overrun shortly before the runway was announced closed.

Emergency services were unable to reach the aircraft quickly due to icing conditions and reported, they can't move the aircraft as of current, the runway needed to be de-iced. A short time later emergency services were successful in pushing the aircraft back, the aircraft taxied to the apron on own power, the passengers disembarked normally at the gate.

Air traffic control queried all arrivals on all runways following the overrun, whether they had picked up on finals or encountered any ice on the runway, crews replied in the negative.

The FAA is investigating.
