A Safair Boeing 737-400, registration ZS-JRD performing flight FA-224 from Johannesburg to George (South Africa), was on approach to George (longest runway 2000 meters/6560 feet) when the crew aborted the approach at 3000 feet reporting problems with the flaps. As they needed a longer runway than available in George the crew decided to divert to Cape Town (longest runway 3200 meters/10500 feet), climbed the aircraft to FL300 and diverted to Cape Town for a safe landing on runway 19 at a higher than normal speed about 50 minutes later.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 6 hours, then resumed service.
