A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N944DL performing flight DL-1996 from Minneapolis,MN to New York La Guardia,NY (USA) with 149 passengers, was climbing out of Minneapolis when a lavatory smoke detector activated prompting the crew to stop the climb at about 13,000 feet and return to Minneapolis for a safe landing about 20 minutes after departure. No evidence of fire, heat or smoke was found.

A replacement MD-88 registration N909DE reached New York with a delay of 2 hours.

The airline reported a lavatory smoke detector went off.
