A Cathay Pacific Airbus A340-300, registration B-HXG performing flight CX-197 (dep Oct 19th) from Hong Kong (China) to Auckland (New Zealand) with 261 passengers, was enroute at FL330 over the Arafura Sea about 430nm northeast of Darwin,NT (Australia) when the crew needed to shut one of the four engines (CFM56) down. The aircraft drifted down to FL310 and diverted to Sydney,NS (Australia) where the aircraft landed safely on Sydney's runway 34L about 4.5 hours later.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Sydney about 38 hours after landing.
