An ANA All Nippon Airways Airbus A320-200, registration JA8947 performing flight NH-773 from Osaka Itami to Sapporo (Japan) with 149 passengers and 6 crew, was accelerating for takeoff from Itami Airport's runway 32L when the right hand engine (CFM56) emitted a loud bang and streaks of flame prompting the crew to reject takeoff at low speed (approximately 70 knots). The aircraft slowed safely, emergency services responded.

The runway was closed for about two hours to remove engine debris left behind as result of the engine failure.

Japan's Ministry of Transport confirmed the right hand engine suffered a failure and ejected parts onto the runway. The runway resumed service about two hours later.

A replacement A320-200 registration JA8654 reached Sapporo with a delay of 4 hours.
