A Cathay Pacific Airbus A330-300, registration B-LAG performing flight CX-170 (scheduled dep Sep 24th, actual dep Sep 25th) from Perth,WA (Australia) to Hong Kong (China) with 254 passengers and 13 crew, was enroute at FL360 about 20nm west of Denpasar, Bali (Indonesia) when the right hand engine (Trent 772) emitted loud bangs and streaks of sparks and flames and caused the aircraft to vibrate. The crew shut the engine down and diverted to Denpasar for a safe landing about 25 minutes later.

Passenger reported there was a huge bang, the right hand engine emitted streaks of flames and the cabin went dark/lights in the cabin extinguished.

The airline confirmed the right hand engine suffered a failure causing sparks but denied passenger and media reports the engine had been on fire, the engine was shut down as result of the failure. The passengers have been taken to hotels until a replacement aircraft arrives to take them to Hong Kong.
