An Air Asia Airbus A320-200, registration 9M-AFZ performing flight AK-136 from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Hong Kong (China), was enroute at FL370 about 90nm south of Da Nang (Vietnam) when the crew decided to divert to Da Nang. The aircraft landed safely about 25 minutes later.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 8.5 hours, then continued the flight and reached Hong Kong with a delay of 9 hours.

A passenger, frequent traveller and well acquainted with turbulence encounters, reported that enroute airframe vibrations started that were not consistent with turbulence. The vibrations worsened and it felt like the aircraft entered a roller coaster. Immediately after the roller coaster the crew announced they were diverting to Da Nang. Due to immigration issues they had to stay on board of the aircraft while maintenance worked. The crew subsequently announced that a part had been replaced, they were now waiting for the final paperwork and would depart in about 30 minutes. Another 30 minutes later a similiar announcement was made. Finally passengers were permitted to disembark into the terminal waiting lounge. Eventually the aircraft was cleared to depart again, the passengers embarked and the aircraft continued to Hong Kong, still encountering unusual airframe vibrations. There was no information provided as to the cause of the vibrations.

Radar data suggest the aircraft encountered altitude diversions of +/- 300 feet just prior to the decision to divert to Da Nang. Following maintenance and departure from Da Nang the aircraft did not climb above FL270.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in Hong Kong for 16.5 hours before resuming service.
