A Jet Time Finland Boeing 737-700, registration OH-JTV performing flight JO-974 from Kavala (Greece) to Helsinki (Finland) with 154 passengers and 6 crew, was enroute at FL400 about 80nm eastsoutheast of Warsaw (Poland) when a loud bang was heard inside the cabin and the passenger oxygen masks were released. The crew descended the aircraft to FL330, advised passengers that the use of the oxygen masks was no longer needed, and continued the flight to Helsinki for a safe landing about 80 minutes after leaving FL400.

A passenger reported there was a loud bang in the cabin, there was a rush of air, very clearly a drop of cabin pressure associated with ear and lung pain, most but not all passenger masks were released and a burning odour developed in the cabin (editorial note: indicative of the passenger chemical oxygen generators operating). There was no announcement by the crew initially, however, the aircraft appeared to be descending. About 10 minutes later the crew announced, that the automatic pressure control of the cabin had failed, they had now engaged manual control, the cabin pressure was back to normal and the use of oxygen masks was no longer needed.

The airline confirmed the failure of the automatic cabin pressure control, the crew switched to manual pressure control and continued the flight. An examination in Helsinki revealed that all passenger oxygen masks had deployed and were operative.
