An Azul Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A, registration PR-ATR performing flight AD-4986 from Curitiba,PR to Passo Fundo,RS (Brazil) with 50 passengers, was climbing out of Curitiba's runway 33 when the left hand engine's (PW127) access doors opened and separated from the aircraft prompting the crew to stop the climb at FL150 and return to Curitiba. The crew declared emergency after receiving an engine fire warning and shut the engine down. The aircraft landed safely back on Curitiba's runway 33 about 40 minutes after departure. Emergency services did not need to intervene, there was no evidence of an engine fire.

The airline reported the aircraft needed to return for unscheduled maintenance.
