A passenger reported that the captain had just returned to the cockpit after a break when within seconds the aircraft entered a large grey cloud and encountered severe turbulence. The flight attendant in the rear galley was thrown against the ceiling and received injuries, she was unable to continue duties. An announcement was made asking for medical staff on board as well as another flight attendant amongst the passengers who could assume duties of the injures cabin crew. Some doctors responded and provided first aid to the flight attendant. The aircraft passed the Grand Canyon in low level flight at high speed on approach to Las Vegas' runways 25, the captain had the aircraft make an extra long flare for a "super smooth" touch down, all passengers were requested to remain seated, four paramedics boarded the aircraft, put the flight attendant onto a stretcher employing precautions for a back injury and took her to the ambulance.
The FAA reported the aircraft encountered turbulence resulting in a minor injury to a flight attendant.
The onward flight to Phoenix was delayed until a replacement flight attendant arrived and reached Phoenix with a delay of one hour.
