A Hainan Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration B-5636 performing flight HU-7244 from Hefei to Guangzhou (China) with 162 passengers and 9 crew, was climbing through 5100 meters (FL167) out of Hefei when the crew received a cargo smoke indication and decided to return to Hefei for a safe landing on Hefei's runway 15 and vacated the runway via high speed turn off A6, about 2200 meters/7200 feet down the runway, stopping clear of the runway. The aircraft was evacuated via slides through all emergency exits. Three passengers received serious injuries (fractured legs, fractured elbow) and 5 passengers minor injuries during the evacuation via the wing and were taken to hospitals.

The Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) have opened an investigation into the occurrence and dispatched investigators on site.

Chinese Authorities reported that 5 passengers remain hospitalized over night, 3 were discharged after treatment.

On Jul 9th 2015 the CAAC reported that examination identified the smoke indication was false, there had been no fire, heat, smoke in the cargo hold, all items in the cargo hold were inspection with no explosives or other hazardeous materials found. In following the procedures emergency services sprinkled the aircraft to cool the aircraft, regardless of whether fire is visible or not. The injuries occurred when people jumped down from the wing.
