A China Southern Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration B-5122 performing flight CZ-3081 from Guangzhou (China) to Bangkok (Thailand) with 132 passengers and 7 crew, was enroute when the crew received a fire indication for the right hand engine (CFM56), shut the engine down and activated the engine fire suppression and diverted to Sanya (China) for a safe landing about 70 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway and was evacuated through the left hand doors and emergency exits via slides. Two passengers received serious (ankle fractures), 11 others minor injuries during the evacuation.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration B-1701 reached Bangkok with a delay of 6 hours.
