A SAS Scandinavian Airlines Airbus A340-300, registration OY-KBI performing flight SK-936 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Copenhagen (Denmark), was climbing through FL320 out of San Francisco near Reno,NV when the crew decided to return to San Francisco reporting smoke in the cockpit. The aircraft descended to FL200 for the return, the smoke dissipated and the aircraft landed safely back on San Francisco's runway 28R about 40 minutes after turning around. The crew advised no assistance by emergency services was needed.

Passengers reported there was smoke in the cabin that appears to originate from the air conditioning system.

The occurrence aircraft departed again the following day with a delay of about 17 hours.
