A Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration 9M-MTE performing flight MH-148 from Melbourne,VI (Australia) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with 279 passengers and 13 crew, was in the initial climb out of Melbourne's runway 34 when the crew declared emergency reporting "engine fire number 2, engine fire number 2" (PW4168, right hand), stopped the climb at about 3500 feet MSL and positioned for an immediate return to Melbourne's runway 34. The aircraft aborted the approach at 2500 feet reporting the fire was out, climbed to 4500 feet for about 18 minutes then landed safely back on Melbourne's runway 34 about 35 minutes after departure. Attending emergency services found no trace of fire or smoke.

Airservices Australia reported the crew reported an engine problem, dumped fuel and returned to Melbourne.

The airport reported that an initial inspection of the engine revealed no evidence of an engine fire, further examination is under way.

The airline confirmed an air turn back of the aircraft carrying 300 people (later detailing 279 passengers and 13 crew), the aircraft landed safely, an examination of the aircraft revealed "no physical evidence of fire externally".

Australia's TSB reported the crew received indication of an engine fire, preliminary investigation did not find any evidence of an actual engine fire.
