A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N918DE performing flight DL-509 from Atlanta,GA (USA) to Providenciales (Turks and Caicos) with 126 passengers and 5 crew, was in the initial climb out of runway 27L still on tower, when tower queried whether they had any issues with the engines (JT8D). The crew affirmed and advised they would return to Atlanta but declined the offer to remain on tower frequency. The crew subsequently reported on departure frequency that they had a left hand engine compressor stall, the engine had rolled back but was not shut down, just running at idle. The aircraft stopped the climb at 5000 feet and returned to Atlanta for a safe landing on runway 27R about 25 minutes after departure.

A replacement MD-88 registration N972DL reached Providenciales with a delay of 2.5 hours.
