An El Al Boeing 747-400, registration 4X-ELC performing flight LY-1 from Tel Aviv (Israel) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was preparing for departure when a technical problem was discovered. Maintenance worked on the issue and cleared the aircraft to depart about 4 hours later. The aircraft departed and was enroute at FL320 about 140nm west of Athens (Greece) when the crew were informed via ACARS that the problem had resurfaced and they were called back to Tel Aviv. The aircraft climbed to FL330 for the return and returned to Tel Aviv for a safe landing about 110 minutes later.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration 4X-ELB is estimated to reach New York with a total delay of 9.5 hours.

The airline confirmed that a technical problem had prompted maintenance work delaying the departure, maintenance thought the problem was solved and released the aircraft, hwoever, in flight the problem re-occurred prompting the decision to call the aircraft back.
