A Fly Niki Airbus A320-200, registration OE-LEU performing flight HG-8641 from Athens (Greece) to Vienna (Austria), was climbing out of Athens' runway 03L when the right hand engine (CFM56) ingested a bird prompting the crew to stop the climb at 5000 feet, shut the engine down and return to Athens. The aircraft positioned for an ILS approach to runway 03R, other aircraft descending towards Athens requesting deviations around build ups as thunderstorms approached the aerodrome, queried whether there was any turbulence reported on the approach to runway 03R with a response in the negative, the aircraft descended to 2500 feet but did not commence the ILS approach prompting tower to instruct "minimum terrain, you have to climb to 4000 feet, climb immediately to 4000 feet". Following the go-around Athens kept runway 03R sterile for the emergency aircraft and reassigned runway 03L to all other traffic. The aircraft subsequently maneouvered around thunderstorm cells requring the aircraft to climb to 6000 feet, the aircraft joined final after the thunderstorms had moved across the airfield. The aircraft landed safely back on Athens' runway 03R 50 minutes after departure.
