The French BEA reported in their weekly bulletin, that the United Kingdom's AAIB rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation stating: "On final visual approach to Bristol Airport, crew became disorientated and descended. Aircraft missed approach and then landed safely off ILS approach."
Bristol Airport is not only well known for its "banana shaped" runway but also for its position on top of a hill over the city. One of the tower controllers at Bristol Airport was famous for his advisory to arriving aircraft: "Be advised, there is cloud BELOW the aerodrome level!"
