A China Southern Boeing 787-800, registration B-2737 performing flight CZ-3402 from Chengdu to Guangzhou (China), had just reached cruise altitude of 10100 meters, when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (GEnx) down due to an oil indication. The aircraft returned to Chengdu for a safe landing about 40 minutes later.

A replacement Boeing 787-800 registration B-2735 reached Guangzhou with a delay of 10 hours.

A passenger reported the first aircraft departed with a delay of 2 hours, the crew told passengers that there was a low right engine engine oil indication requiring maintenance. The crew subsequently reported the engine had been successfully repaired, the aircraft departed. About 30 minutes into the flight the problem resurfaced however, the crew needed to shut the engine down and returned to Chengdu.

The airline reported shortly after takeoff aircraft systems indicated a possible mechanical problem.
