A Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400, registration G-VXLG performing flight VS-75 from Manchester,EN (UK) to Orlando,FL (USA), was enroute at FL320 about 60nm northwest of Dublin (Ireland) when the crew reported they needed to return to Manchester due to a burning smell on the flight deck. The aircraft descended normally to FL190 and landed safely back on Manchester's runway 05L about 40 minutes after leaving FL320 and turning around.

The occurrence aircraft was able to depart again after about 3 hours on the ground and is currently estimated to reach Orlando with a delay of 4 hours.

A passenger reported that they were kept on the aircraft while on the ground in Manchester, then they were told that the issue had been isolated and they were ready to depart again, however, the food had been destroyed, so that no hot meals would be available.

Another passenger reported that a new flight crew boarded the aircraft and announced, that the problem had been located, a cooling fan was identified as cause of the smell. Cabin crew announced the meals had already started to be cooked and could no longer be used, recatering would delay the flight so they were loading sandwiches, snacks and cold food, no hot meals would be available.
