A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N947DL performing flight DL-1672 from Buffalo,NY to Atlanta,GA (USA) with 153 people, was climbing out of Buffalo's runway 23 when the crew reported the flight attendants had heard a strange noise from the left hand engine (JT8D), they had no indications but had reduce the engine to idle and wanted to return to Buffalo's runway 23 as a precaution, they were not in a hurry to land back. The aircraft landed safely back on runway 23 about 30 minutes after departure.

A replacement MD-88 registration N915DL reached Atlanta with a delay of 8.5 hours.

The airline reported an engine indication prompted the crew to return to Buffalo, the aircraft carried 174 passengers and 5 crew (while the crew had reported 153 souls on board).
