A Ryanair Boeing 737-800, registration EI-EGC performing flight FR-5000 from Lamezia-Terme to Rome Fiumicino (Italy), was climbing out of Lamezia-Terme when the aircraft flew through a flock of bird and ingested a number of birds into an engine (CFM56) prompting the crew to level off at 6000 feet, shut the engine down and return to Lamezia-Terme for a safe landing about 30 minutes after departure.

The passengers were rebooked onto the next flight and reached Rome with a delay of 2 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Lamezia-Terme about 42 hours after landing.

The airline confirmed an engine received damage when the aircraft collided with a flock of birds.
